Banadir FC winners of the 2016 Toronto SomaliWeek Soccer Tournament


TORONTO (HOL) - The Banadir FC of Toronto were crowned winners of the 2016 SomaliWeek  Soccer Tournament held at Centennial Park Stadium in Toronto, Canada

Banadir FC defeated Minnesota TC Stars on penalty shoot-out after match is drawn for the regulation time

More than 12 teams from Canada, USA and UK participated in the tournament namely Banadir FC of Toronto, Ottawa FC, Hilaac FC of Toronto, Minnesota TC Stars, Minnesota Tigers, Olympia 808, North London, Seif of Toronto, Hamilton FC, Kichnear FC, Ohio FC.

The tournament which is put on annually by the Toronto Development Association of Youth (TODAY) was held at Centennial Park Stadium, Etobicoke, Toronto.

Several high profile government officials attended the event including the Somali Ambassador to the US Ahmed Isse Awad, th first Somali Canadian Member of Parliament Ahmed Hussen, MP for York South and many former Somali soccer legends who also attended at the closing ceremony of the event.

Somali Week’ was first held in Toronto back in the early 90’s by a group of Somali sportsmen who fled the civil war, including Somali soccer players Mukhtar Ute, Antar Jenyo and many others.
