AMISOM apologises for shooting dead a civilian in Somalia

Friday, October 21, 2016

MOGADISHU - The African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on Thursday apologised for shooting dead a civilian and injuring two others at a military camp in Mogadishu.

The mission said in a statement that the incident took place on Wednesday when a convoy of civilian contractors stopped at the camp for a routine security check.

"Unfortunately, one of the soldiers conducting the security check accidentally shot a driver dead and injured two others."

AMISOM said it was investigating the incident.

In July the mission launched an investigation into the alleged killing of 14 civilians by Ethiopian soldiers.

AMISOM said the civilians were killed during fighting between its troops and the radical Islamist group Shabaab, however witnesses said they opened fire without provocation on a prayer meeting.

In April four civilians were shot dead by soldiers who mistook them for fighters with the Al-Qaeda-linked Shabaab militants which has vowed to overthrow the country's fragile Western-backed authorities.

The Somali government is defended by the African Union's 22,000-strong AMISOM mission, which chased Shabaab out of Mogadishu in August 2011.
