MOGADISHU (HOL) - Somali security forces have killed two gunmen who attacked a beachside restaurant in the Somali capital late on Thursday, ending an assault on the building that killed at least 10 people, police said.
The attack at around 6:30pm (local time) on began after a suicide car bomber prematurely detonate explosives-laden vehicle in after security forces tried to stop him, as suspected militants battled into the restaurant where customers were smoking shisha pipe.
Al-Shabab claimed the responsibility for the attack, saying that its fighters killed ‘scores’ of people during the attack.
16 people were also injured in the hours-long attack which highlights challenges facing efforts by Somali government and African Union forces to secure the long chaotic city.
Al-Shabab had attacked beachside restaurant often frequented by young men and women for entertainment and dining before.
