MOGADISHU (HOL) – Somalia’s prime minister visited Garowe town, the administrative capital of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland Friday for talks to defuse tension between Puntland and its
neighboring Galmudug state following clashes in Galkayo that left at least 10 people dead this week.

Hundreds of residents fled from their homes during Sunday’s clashes. Despite a ceasefire deal by traditional elders, the war rhetoric from both sides seem to be dashing hopes of peace as the two sides continue to mobile forces for a potential new fighting.

Somali officials said Somali prime minister Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke flew to Garowe after a short visit to Adado town, the headquarters of Galmudug state, one day after Puntland official prevented him from travelling to Galkayo for mediation efforts.

His visit comes after Puntland accepted his arrival Friday, raising hopes for possible negotiations to end hostilities.

During his visit, the prime minister who met with Puntland’s president Abdiweli Mohamed Ali is also expected to hold talks with traditional elders and officials.

During his visit in Adado, Mr. Sharmarke has encouraged elders and officials to work towards peace to avoid further confrontations.

Galmudug administration blamed Puntland president of orchestrating the fighting which has put the town on lock-down, an accusation dismissed by the Puntland government.

Galkayo town is divided into two zones, where the northern portion forms part of Puntland state, while its southern part is governed by the Galmudug administration.
