An unknown number of policemen are feared dead after Al-Shabaab militants ambushed their vehicles at Yumbis in Fafi sub-county, Garissa County.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that at least 20 policemen were killed in the attack.

Three officers who escaped the Monday night attack said four police vehicles were burnt by the militants.

The police officers were in a convoy of four vehicles heading to Yumbis hours after their colleagues were injured in another attack on Monday afternoon.

In the Monday afternoon attack, three police officers were injured after their vehicle ran over a land mine.

Jarajila Member of Garissa County Assembly Mahat Osman said the police officers were heading to Yumbis Location when the vehicle ran over the land mine at Yarey.

He said the injured officers were taken to Garissa Referral Hospital.

Fafi Sub-County Commissioner Geoffrey Taragon said the injured officers were out of danger.

The attack on police officers comes a week after Al-Shabaab militants attacked Yumbis Village and preached to locals for hours.
