An officer working with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) attached to the Old Port Police Station was shot Wednesday night by unknown people at Kuze in Old Town, Mombasa County.

According to an eyewitness, the attackers shot Mr Ibrahim Mohammed, 48, also known as Baba three times at around 9.30pm.

Old Town ward representative Amur Murfad immediately called on the government to quickly tackle insecurity in the area.

“We are surprised at how people are being assassinated and the government is doing nothing,” he said.

Shocked and distraught relatives of the slain detective described him as a very understanding and hardworking police officer who was dedicated to the police service.

They said he once worked as a General Service Unit officer before he was transferred to Mombasa as a detective.

They said the officer was shot in the abdomen and in the chest and he later succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to Mombasa Hospital.

RECEIVED DEATH THREATS

An eyewitness, who is also a close friend of the officer, said Mr Mohammed had been receiving death threats after warning a suspected criminal to stop his criminal activities.

“A few days after the incident, the officer started receiving death threats from unknown people who are suspected to be criminal gangs,” said the eyewitness.

The eyewitness, who said he has known the officer for more than 10 years and had stayed with him until he met his death, said the attackers are said to have been walking on foot.

“There were two, one tall, the other short, and they used an AK-47 to eliminate him.

“The tall one wore a jacket and a pair of shorts. He had a mask on his face so it was hard to identify him.

"The short man was clad in a buibui.

“After the shooting, the short man came and searched the officer and took his gun,” added the eyewitness.

He said he and the officer were in a meeting discussing rising insecurity in the area when the gunmen struck.

“We were sitting a few meters from his house discussing how to tackle the rising insecurity in the area when the gunmen struck.

“We were so shocked that we were unable to do anything,” he said.

Mr Mohammed was rushed to Mombasa Hospital but died on arrival.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted at Pandya Hospital before he is buried later Thursday according to Islamic rites.
