FIFA, world soccer’s governing body, on Thursday said it would move the 2021 Confederations Cup from Qatar to another Asian country.
Qatar is hosting the 2022 World Cup, likely to be played in either November or December. The Confederations Cup, typically an eight-team dress rehearsal for the World Cup, will be moved elsewhere for the summer of 2021. Summer temperatures that reach as high as 120 degrees will prevent Qatar from being able to hold the World Cup during its traditional time of June and July.
FIFA didn’t immediately name a replacement site for the 2021 Confederations Cup.
