Djibouti – Within the framework of the international effort to promote peace, security and stabilize Somalia, Italy trains the Somali Police force.

150 officers from the Somali police force are taking part to a training course organized by the Italian Carabineri in Djibouti.

The course will provide a specific training in the following subjects: code of conduct and human rights, crowd and riot control, police operations in urban areas, basic life support/combat life support, VIP close protection, explosive ordnance recognition, land navigation and communication, shooting practice, patrolling and operational procedures.

Its aim is to enhance the capability to train other personnel and to create, in case of need, a robust police unit operating with common police procedures. The units being trained come from different area of the country: 50 from Puntland, 100 from center-south regions such as Baidoa, Beledweyne (Hiran), Galmudug, Garbahaarrey (Gedo) and Mogadishu.

Thus, a truly national, interclanic police force will take shape and trainees from all over Somalia will acquire and develop team building skills.

The personnel was deployed to Djibouti at the beginning of last week with an Italian military aircraft and will be equipped with uniforms and training kit which will remain in their use after the training. The course activities will last three months.
