United Nations (HOL) - President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his delegation held high level talks with key stakeholders and international partners in New York, before the official opening of the 69th UN General Assembly.
The President, whose delegation includes the Somali Minister for Foreign Affairs and Investment Promotion Abdirahman Beileh as well as senior policymakers and advisers, met with Nick kay, the UN Special representative to Somalia, the head of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the vice president of the World Bank’s Africa division. The President further held private talks with the head of the ICRC Mr. Peter Murree.
In all the meetings President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud discussed the current situation of Somalia and whilst acknowledging the challenges, conveyed his hopes that, with further coordinated and sustained efforts, Somalia will turn the corner to security, progress and prosperity.
The Somali Foreign Minister, Abdirahman Beileh also held meetings with the Italian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended a meeting with the UN Counter terrorism Centre as well as represented Somalia at the Arab League meeting of Foreign Ministers.
President Hassan Sheikh was invited and attended a reception hosted by the US President Barack Obama at the world famous Waldorf Astoria. Tomorrow, he will co-chair with UN Secretary Banki-Moon a high level meeting on political progress in Somalia.
