London, UK (GSD) - The Somali community in Holland hosted yesterday a formal launch of the Global Somali Diaspora (GSD). GSD is a non-profit international organisation that aims to advocate, promote, connect and organise Somali diaspora communities. Ali Ware the chairman of Federation Somali Associations in the Netherland (FSAN) has kicked of the meeting. Ali spoke of how Netherlands has a strong Somali Community which can play in a pivotal role in tackling global and local issues and working towards a unified Somali Diaspora.
Other Notable guest-speakers included Fadumo Farah, Director of Hirda Foundation, one of the leading migrant development organisatios. In addition to improving the lives of Somalis living in Somalia, one other core mission of Hirda is to mobilise and develop a strong Somali Diaspora in the Netherlands in the development of Somalia. Fadumo who is also a founding member of GSD, encouraged Somali diaspora members to re-double their investment in Somalia, in particularly, she stressed the need to invest in Agricultural area to increase communities’ food security, resilience and self-reliance. Fatumo stated “our people have high level of entrepreneurial and business skills, but they need investments and mentors from the Somali Diaspora.
Abdi Barud, GSD also took to the platform. He explained GSD’s objectives, management structure, achievement so far and the direction of travel. Abdi stated “I am extremely delighted with the outcome of the GSD launch in Holland. GSD came here today to combine forces with prominent Somali organisations and individuals to share our knowledge and experience and to pave the way to provide credible and consistent voice for all Somalis and advocate their interest, connectivity and dignity. We share a common goal in creating and developing a strong network of Diasporas for the betterment of Somalis everywhere.”
Other active community members also spoke during the event and welcomed GSD. Overall, this was an interactive and lively meeting where all attendees took part of the discussion and shared their visions, views and aspirations.
